Public Light was a one night show in a dilapidated industrial building in Columbus, Ohio which sought to illuminate the space with a record of its own illuminance.
Earlier in the day video and audio were recorded in and around the building. Using Max/MSP Jitter ten copies of the video were layered and animated to undulate against the others. The audio is not manipulated, however, when ten iterations of the same file play fractions of a second out of sync startlingly mechanical sounds emerge from birdsong, footsteps, and the creaking of an old building.
For the show this video was projected through a circular mask and projected onto a pile of old cotton wall insulation. The sound system was placed in a massive ventilation duct which carried the audio throughout the building.
